Sophie's Sixth Day

Sophie in Daddy's hands after her bath last night.

Denali "encouraging" Richard to wipe her properly. Note the PINK clothes rack in background.

Anna Lord with Juliet Black 's (Nicoll) baby Ella (on left) and Sophie. Ella is 14 weeks old.

I went back to work today in a somewhat dazed and weary state. It was good to get back into the swing of things in town after spending so much time in hospital and at home. However, that actually made work quite hard as I missed them both like crazy throughout the day, often checking Google Talk to see what Sophie had been up to. Today was quite busy and we look set to have a busy week, but I am looking forward to directing a National Bank video on Friday.

Since I was away for most of the day, here is Denali to tell you what happened...

Sophie had a mixed night. She didn't settle until about 2am (Mom took over about 1am and I went to bed - Grandma's are great) with lots of tummy pains then woke about 3am for a feed. However she then slept til 8.30am, so the day started really well. She played in the sun this morning on our bed - so cute wriggling around with no nappies on! Pretty much the rest of the day she slept..... She had feeds and then fell back to sleep almost immediately as if drunk on milk.

Kuki, one of our midwives came to visit and Sophie has lost 260gms, quite normal apparently for babies to lose weight after birth before they start gaining weight again. Then we had a lovely visit from Anna Lord, Jack, Juliet and Ella (pictured above).

I am beginning to see just how much energy all the washing and cooking that my Mom has been doing is going to take....I have just been a feeding machine really and Mom and Richie have been my slaves - I am going to have to start getting more active - it is all just a bit tricky and sore from having the c-section.

We spent this evening trying to keep Sophie awake so she would sleep well tonight. We were rather unsuccessful, so fingers crossed we all can get some sleep!!

Thanks again for all your text messages, phone calls, emails, prayers and gifts.

Love and sleepy smiles
Denali xox

Director?... no not yet. Our producer is off to Ireland for 2 weeks so isn't available to direct this one video. Hence my involvement.

HELLLLOOOO! Hope you guys have been telling sophie all about her uncle kris! and how awesome he is! When do babies get their proper colour in their eyes?

Yes, Kris. We tell her everyday how awesome all her uncles are. She can't wait to meet you... I think... well, actually I wouldn't know... because she's a baby and she can't talk yet. Anyway, I am sure she will be aware of someone else in the room by the time you do meet her.

Regarding baby's eye colour... In basic terms, eye colour is determined by the amount of a pigment called melanin that is in the iris of the eye. Brown eyes have lots of pigment, blue eyes very little. The amount of pigment is determined by a number of genes controlling pigment production. Generally speaking, brown is dominant, meaning that if one parent has brown eyes and the other has blue eyes, the baby will most likely have brown eyes.

When a baby is first born, the eye still has not fully developed this dark pigment. Thus, newborns typically have blue or gray eyes (which many Caucasian babies have at birth).

When Sophie is about six months old, we’ll have a better idea of eye colour as pigmentation begins to form and brown or darker eyes might appear. Denali has brown eyes (and brown is dominant), whereas I have blue eyes. Sophie's eye colour should be determined by about age one, although it could change through adulthood.
