Wellington Finals Over

Naomi (Producer), Shahir (Editor) and myself went to the Wellington Finals at the Embassy last night. It was a fantastic evening and there were some incredible films shown. I came away from the evening 100% certain that we had been robbed of a place at the final though. There were three... possibly four films that had very weak stories and simply didn't deserve to be there. However, there were 8 stunning, entertaining and well made films that I am very happy to have been beaten by.

My top favourites were:

World of Rope (Educational) - a pretend old-school german video about the dangers of rope. It had me in stitches. It was so well written and acted. I nearly fell off my seat; it was soooo funny!

Bookcase (Crime) - a brilliant story about a librarian stealing books and another librarian who figures him out.

La promenade des moutons (March of the Sheep) (Unnecessary Sequel) - Simple but very funny story that closely follows the life of sheep and their mistaken migration into the city.

Shooting Star (Musical) - Made by the team from Loop. This was shot on film and turned around within 48 hours, but aside from that they wrote original music and lyrics and made an absolutely stunning film about a woman who witnesses a man stuffing a dead body into his car after a car crash. She calls the cops and it turns out that the woman that was killed is someone the cop knows.
The film that won - Maori Detective and the Boogie Fever (Grindhouse) was good too. It was well written and well acted, but I thought there were better films that played on the night.
