The Lounge

We are starting to settle a lot more into our great wee house. We had our first guests over on Thursday night - The Eleys and Anna Davidson. Because the house is smaller than our house in Christchurch we are having to prune a few items of furniture... like my big computer desk... actually, now that I think about it I cannot recall how it came to be that ALL OF A SUDDEN we were getting rid of MY computer desk. Anyway... it's on TradeMe and looks like it will sell in the next 2hours.
Denali's tummy is popping at the seams and she now finds it tiring just walking around because her feet get really sore quite quickly. My feet get sore too... but that's because I need new insoles for my shoes... which is just as big a deal. We start antinatal classes on April 22nd!... and goodness me, we could already have the baby by then!
As requested, here are some photos of my work and a more detailed description of what I do there.
Propeller Productions produces mostly corporate videos and television commercials. We are also chasing a TV series at the moment, but I cannot say any more about that. Among others, our clients include Telecom, AMP, ACC, ANZ, National Bank, Tourism New Zealand, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. I work from 8:30am - 5:30pm and during this time I am pretty much editing on 3 different Avid suites. My job also involves a small amount of audio mixing (ProTools kicks ass!) and small amounts of motion graphic and compositing work and looking after these suites and solving any technical problems that crop up. So far it has been a lot of hard work and rather stressful. At any given point in the day I am either up to my ears in footage, buried in a stack of technical manuels or combing the internet for solutions... or hiding in the toilet. Although, like any job we have our quiet times too... hence being able to update the blog!
I work closely with four other people - Hayden (motion graphics and compositing artist), Dave (the director), Nick (audio and dubs) and Naomi (the facilities manager). Together we work from beginning to end on all projects except those we bring in and facilitate ourselves. Working here is a lot of fun and this job will provide a great opportunity to really improve my technical knowledge and develop my creative skills and editing ability. At first I was cursing Avid for being such a pain in the ass, but now that I am starting to get used to most of the keyboard operations it has become easier and a lot more fluid. I have brought in my Wacom tablet from home and eventually I will use this in conjunction with the keyboard for editing. Work had offered to get me a new one, but I couldn't see the point. I will only be playing games at home now, so I may as well bring in my own one. Plus... it's always good to try and save the boss money! Although, they did buy two 20inch widescreen LCD monitors to replace the crappy 19inch CRTs they had in my suite. So... Phil and Steve... there is a 19inch CRT monitor waiting for you both at our house.
One of the guys who works here (Nick) is in a band called Over the Atlantic. He kicks ass on ProTools and will soon begin showing me some great tricks with audio mixing and editing. But I still have a long way to go with post audio work.
I hope the photos give you all a good feel for the place. I have only taken photos of the DOWNSTAIRS part of Propeller... but upstairs is just the director, producer and manager's offices. We hope to see as many of you that can make it up after the baby is born. Denali and I will take a trip down to Christchurch over a long weekend after the birth (not sure what is coming up though), so we will catch up with you then. Over Easter we are hoping that my bros Phil and Steve (Mike will be in Mongolia) can come up and stay. If you want to come up then too, then just send us an e-mail or post a comment on this blog and we can arrange something. Also, for those of you travelling to Wellington for concerts or other such things, please consider our home a hotel... at least until the baby is born, after which it becomes a maternity ward for a brief time before reverting back to a hotel again. We live very, very close to popular, well serviced transport routes and we are only a 10 minute drive into the city (off peak times).
